Cost a bit more, but gosh it made it all that more like a little vacation.
Stayed overnight at the Quality Inn in Mountain View...totally worth it.

just want to give a quick shout and throw some props at this year's organizers for putting together such a killer lineup. there's tons of stuff listed that i don't know much about that i'm sure is awesome, but here's the shit i'm most aMped about...

downtempo set by tipper--'nuff said. this will be awesome.
amon tobin--ofcourse.
lusine--if y'all slept on Serial Hodgepodge a while back, be sure to check out tracks one (for sure) and seven (i think)...they both bang.
digitonal is awesome. i'm not familiar with posthuman, but if digitonal is collaborating with them, i'm sure they rock too. i've never heard digitonal live, i've heard they're sets are epic.
deru is producing some awesomely good music right now, and killed it at Avant last fall.
ditto for tycho, who was unknown to me before last summer and was one of my favorite sets of that night.
local favorite DrToast always brings the crunchy and has all these dope new tracks he's been playing. yes. you will like.
mrprojectile brings layers. that's all i can say. it's pull-it-apart music in the best of all possible ways.
BLVD and souleye bring the energy up and are (and i can vouch for this) all awesome people...souleye's rhymes set these guys apart from the other clowns that try to bite blvd's style, but they shine on their own too.
zoey keating does this incredible looping cello shit that will blow you away. seriously, don't miss this.
gamelan x is far and away THE BEST progressive gamelan band in sf. i love.

saul griffith is speaking too and i've heard he's all kinds of smart and a great speaker and will drop some serious science on those lucky to hear him speak...i'm hoping to be one of them.

so that's all i've got...who are all you excited about?

here's a favorite of late: Digitonal has blessed us with a brand new exclusive hour long mix in honor of Yuri and our celebration of his legacy. listening critically, it's clear this is a work he has crafted with immense care. i am actually taken aback at the beauty and intricacies of this mix -- i haven't heard an ambient set that's engaged me this much in some time. part of it's due to the sonic memories of 12+ years ago that are unlocked from old familar tunes from B12, Future Sound of London, etc. and part of it is just the innate beauty of the frequency patterns floating across my eardrums and into my auditory cortex. whatever the reason i must admit that i'm feeling some gratitude for this gift. i look forward to thanking Andy in person.

enough gushing ... hear it for yourself on the YNBA music blog page my musical co-conspirator, Matt Ganucheau, launched in conjunction with CreateDigitalMusic.com : http://yuricdm.com

the track list is available right there and off Digitonals website. if you're not able to get to the direct download easily, follow this link: -l http://metaph.org/music/digitonal-soundtrack_of_space.mp3
Here are a few of the jobs that need to be filled:

* Technology Showcase Coordinator -- This is a big and important job! You could serve as the liason between Yuri's Night and the bay area technology companies who will be demoing at the event. This is a good chance to interact with and meet a lot of really cool people.

* NASA Science/Technology Coordinator -- similar to the technology showcase coordinator, but serving as the liason to the NASA exhibitors.

* Master of Finances -- Help us to keep track of our budget and expenditures as we start spending money

* Salon/Discussion Moderators -- We also need individuals to help us moderate the "daytime" discussions at the event.

* Food Vending Coordinator -- Dinnertime occurs right in the middle of the event this year, so this is a big job!
* Merchandise Vending Coordinator -- Help us manage people who want to sell non food items (e.g. clothing, electronics kits, etc.)

* Lead Decorator -- Our deco team currently has 0 people! Help!

* Event promotion team members -- do you have any experience promoting events online? In print? In person?

Yuri's Night World Space Parties celebrate humankind's first venture into
space by Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961. The event is a
unique convergence of artists, scientists, astronauts, performers,
technologists, and musicians to pay tribute to our shared global heritage in
space exploration. Through simultaneous celebrations worldwide, Yuri's Night
is a collaboration of creative thinkers from all fields to ignite excitement
about what is new on the horizon in space exploration and to remind us of
the inspiring possibilities that humanity can achieve.

We invite artists and scientists to investigate and demonstrate our
culture's radical new technology, art and vision for sustaining our future.

We're looking for visionaries of the sciences and arts to join our
celebration: artists who love science, scientists who love art, and those
who blur the line between all disciplines. Exhibit or demonstrate your works
in the spacious NASA hangars or adjoining tarmac and structures.

Yuri's Night Bay Area 2008 will be held in two large hangars, totaling
80,000 square feet and extending over 400,000 square feet on the adjoining
open tarmac. The rare access to expansive combined indoor and outdoor spaces
encourages large-scale installations and the potential for unusual works and
performances showcased on the adjoining tarmac. The main music stage will be
at the far end of the tarmac, leaving the largest hangar exclusively for
installations, performances and demonstrations.

This is an exciting opportunity for unique collaboration between the science
world and the art world. We encourage partnerships between scientific and
artistic minds and may be able to assist in partnering.

We are looking for:

New installations of all sizes and types, interactive works, sound works,
light works, large-scale sculpture, live demonstrations, working models,
table top demonstrations, prototypes, new technology, presentations,
impromptu lectures, and unique performances from international and local
artists. We are also seeking new video works documenting arts, humanities,
performances, installations and microgravity works.

We encourage all applicants to think of ways to make their projects more
ecologically friendly and sustainable. This may include the use of recycled
or reused materials, the incorporation of renewable power sources,
demonstrations of green technology, or just a plan for transporting the
project that reduces gasoline use. Please let us know in your application
if your project has been planned or will be presented with any such
features.

The ultimate Renaissance bash, with a Feast of Fools, Knights on Horseback, Magicians, Jugglers, Music And an Amazing Shopping Experience - www.ggfaire.com

San Francisco, CA – Brave knights clad in shining armor thunder down the list on their spectacular horses at ferocious speeds while trying to knock one another off their steeds. Stilt walkers, jugglers, fire- eaters and jesters perform over-the-top stunts. Swordsmen expertly wield their weapons in the daily sword tournaments. A court of justice dispenses punishment to children who did not mind their parents and husbands or wives who did not express their love enough times. Mud diving peasants kiss the feet of passing by patrons who happen to take the moment to peruse the scene. In sharp contrast, the Queen’s court makes a regal entrance dressed in incredible, colorful garments of gold, silks, and velvet. Voices and music announce the arrival and passage of her Majesty, and her nobles and ambassadors.

The fourth annual Golden Gate Renaissance Faire, in San Francisco, CA., held August 25-26th is the ultimate Renaissance bash, a lively Dionysian party, where the guests enjoy turkey legs, exotic food, and drink as they banter with the myriad performers filling the streets.

The event sports one-of-a-kind shows, music, and comedy. Just a sampling of the talent includes:

* Myth and Magic, a two men comedy and magic show
* Fowl Tales, a one man, three parrot and one dog extravaganza performance that charms and entertains the whole family.
* Trey Cromwell, Professional Showoff, a one man danger show that combines combining variety arts like juggling, contortion and escape artistry into a seamless whole.
* The Merry Praynksters, a country dancing group, will whirl and wind among the patrons with their period dancing while Danse Macabre will progress through the streets enthralled in their dance with death their hunting music and attire leaving patrons in awe.

One of the Weekend’s highlights will be the Knights of Mayhem, a professional jousting troupe made up of actual jousting champions who will compete in duels on horseback twice daily showcasing their stunning horsemanship and skillful spectacles in Pas De Arms contests. The Knights of Mayhem boast the very best in jousting, showmanship, horsemanship and Medieval entertainment. The Knights come from as far as Utah and Michigan to perform their unique show and are not an experience to be missed. The two lead Knights - Charlie Andrews and Shane Adams both hold International Jousting Titles and are considered some of the hardest hitting Knights of the International Jousting Circuit. Their jousts are never scripted, but simply a way for them to keep fit for the time they face themselves again not as compatriots but as competitors. And as they never pull punches, an unhorsing is ever an imminent possibility. Contests will include spear throwing, ring spearing and cabbage cutting. And then, onlookers will be astounded by the action of the hard-hitting lance-splitting jousting. Hundreds of pounds of man, horse and metal collide and do battle right before your eyes.

The cast of over a 1000 actors and groups come together from the four corners of the country and will be led by three talented and seasoned actresses performing roles of Queens Jane Gray and Mary Tudor and the young Princess Elizabeth. Queen Jane will be played by 18 year old Megan Fisher, resident of San Diego. Megan has been performing at Renaissance events for over three years as a member of St. Augustine’s Guild. Her supporting cast will be led by the Saint Marie, a renowned improv group from the Los Angeles area. Liz Martin will play the role of Queen Mary Tudor. Liz’ involvement in acting and Renaissance Faires spans more than a decade. Her supporting courtiers includes members of the renowned English court guilds: St. Stephens and St. George.

"It happens live, right before your eyes and all around," says Bill Watters, organizer of the event. "The immersive experience of a faire is the one thing that everyone will remember. Many people may have seen jousting in the movies or on TV, but here you are in the midst of the action and spectacle."

100s of merchants will display various wares and one of the kind items and crafts for sale. They include clothing, jewelry, leatherworks and swords. There will also be food vendors selling everything from Turkey legs to crepes to Oriental food to scones, popcorn and other treats for every preference.

A portion of festival profits will be donated to a local San Francisco high school. “We hope to continue to direct attention towards preserving arts programs as a part of the educational curriculum,” said Marti Miernik, performance director of the Golden Gate and Renaissance Productions. ”Studies have long shown the positive impact the arts have on children. And in that vein, we hope to help preserve and support after hours programs and the performing arts.”

About 10,000 patrons are expected to attend over the two days of this year's Golden Gate Renaissance Faire. The faire will run August 25th and 26th. Gates will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The cost of admission is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors, military, and ages 13-17, $5.00 for children 6-12. Children under six are free. For more information, and directions to the grounds, visit www.ggfaire.com or call 415 354 1773.

Behavior that you might feel is appropriate at other events might not be appropriate here. Use your judgment, if in doubt, save it for another night. Here's a message from the folks at the NASA Ames facility, PLEASE take a look, http://www.worldspaceparty.com/nasa_msg.php

* We might sell out! This is for real. It's looking more and more likely that we will sell out, actually, and possibly fairly early in the night.

* Most of our vendors will be cash only. There will be ATMs onsite but you should plan on bringing however much cash you need to get you through the night.

* Please be respectful of the site and the crew and volunteers who have worked hard to make this happen. Please put your trash and recyclables where they belong. Respect the amazing art, science displays and decorations that will be at the event.

Does anyone have her contact information to pass on to me?

I'm the editor of Science Fiction/San Francisco, a Bay Area ezine. I personally cover lots of science events as well as science fiction/fantasy events. And we've listed Yuri's Night in our most recent issue in the calendar section (page 24 with a photo of Anousheh Ansari):

I'd appreciate a reply as soon as possible so I can contact Delia before the event. I need press passes for myself, as the writer, and another for my photographer.
