Earth Beats Drum Circle - Friday June 19th, 2009

Troupe Bal Hepsi will be making a show of it at the Earth Beats Drum Circle with "paparazzi" ( sp?) in tow. a reporter for the paper wants to do a story on them and get some live action "IN PERFORMANCE" stuff of their act. This is a very exciting and wonderful thing for the Drum Circle. If You are planning on being there then dress the part a little. Expect to give over the floor for a bit to their performance and sit back and enjoy. It should be a wonderfully enjoyable evening...spread the word and pack the place with drummers and dance enthusiasts lets fall out the door and onto the sidewalks.
this is OUR chance to make something in Plant City RAK, get our activities into the mainstream and encourage audiences that are not dancers ( dancing for other dancers) and Drummers ( drumming for other drummers)
It is going to be a fantastic Summer!

Tribal Class with Lisa November 9th

yaay, I just got back from Peru in one piece...didn't break anything this time. I just heard from Lee...I am coming over again to teach a tribal Improvisation workshop. This time I will be at the Rhapsody Ballroom Studio in Tampa, Sunday, November 9th from 1 to 3:30. After speaking with some of the members of Zahara, the request was for tribal combinations that use both sides of the body and general improv tips and techniques so that is what we are focusing on.
I'll be going to Tribal Garden sponsored by Florida Tribal Dance on November 1st --Can I get a soft copy of a flyer to take with me? I can print them out. Who should I put people in contact with if they are interested in attending?

if you are taking the group improv class at Tribal Solstice, bring along some music you would like to improv to..Preferably, a piece you have not really performed to, but it should be music you are somewhat familiar with, and maybe would like to perform to at some point. Should be less than 5 minutes..the shorter the better. I am trying something different with this class. Sure, I'll be teaching one Adelpha combo that will work with most 4/4 music and tempos, but the emphasis on the class will be on my experiences with improv that might be useful to you... I am not promising we are going to get to everyone's selections, so that is why short pieces are best. Please spread the word..I won't get to everyone because I have no idea who is registered, but we'll give it a shot with the music provided by you.

Event hours are 12pm –10pm on Saturday and 10am -6pm on Sunday.

We will be performing on stage Saturday at 3pm and 7:30, Sunday at 11:45 and 3:30.
Don't forget to come to the Parade at 1pm on Sunday! We will be dancing thru the streets!

Workshop Descriptions:
Part 1: Drumming for Dancers
Basic technique will be covered as necessary to accommodate novice drummers. More advanced techniques will be demonstrated for intermediate/advanced drummers. Following the warm-up will be a call and response exercise using a selection of common rhythms that can be drilled with variations suitable to the level of each drummer. Putting the rhythms together will introduce concepts of transitions and endings. Drummer/Dancer etiquette, communication, counting cycles, ideas for accompanying soloists, troupes, and/or ATS dancers will be discussed. If time allows we will also discuss the structure for a drum solo for the dancer. Handouts will be provided and instructional cds available for purchase. Doumbeks are preferred but frame drums and zills are also welcome. Drummers are also encouraged to take Part 2: Dancing for Drummers to put to practice what they have just learned!

Part 2: Dancing for Drummers
The purpose of this workshop is to listen and dance to the drum. Having knowledge of rhythm and rhythmic structure will enable dancers to define the dance they create whether as a soloist, with a troupe, using choreography or improvisation. In addition to listening and identifying the most common rhythms, points covered will include communication with the drummer, counting cycles, knowing where the "one" is, hearing the accents and transitions, rhythm vs. melody and playing zills. An exercise for all participants will include choosing two rhythms randomly then communicate with the drummer and improvise or choreograph a short dance. Although the workshop will cater to all levels a basic knowledge of the dance is assumed. Participants are encouraged to bring zills. Handouts will be provided.

USF Women's Studies Performance --Final Details!

Hey I want to thank all the ladies of Troupe Zahara who came out and helped make the Halloween party a success.
everyone said they had fun and as that was the whole intention then it was successful.

Frèdèrique began studying American Tribal Style belly dance in February of 1997 and after a long journey of experimentation and self realization, she is now known for her voix de ville (voice of the city) style and pushing musical boundaries by arranging music to enhance her conceptual narrative, creating a sound and sight stage reflecting the intricate nuances of her movement and complementing her technical skill combined with her depth of heart in performance.

Frédérique's original look revolved around the foundation of *ATS, her roots in belly dance until 2004 where she began adding elements of the 20's, 30's, and 40's Hollywood era with undertones of carnival, music box, ballerina themes all with the touch from the darker side, arranged together to produce a tangible vision of her creativity, expression, and love for the Arts. Performance for USF Women's Studies Department

We've been invited to perform for the Women's Studies Department at USF as part of the Thanksgiving Week Issues in Feminism (Body Image) class.

Here is the scoop:

Showtime is at 12:30, Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The show will be in one of two places on Tampa USF Campus--CPR 103 (Cooper Hall) or UHL (University Lecture Hall). We want UHL because it has a stage, but if it's already taken, then we get the next largest place, which is CPR 103.

The show will be open to the public as in the USF community and who ever else might be around at that time of day.

We have roughly 75 min, the amount of time that the Issues in Feminism class meets.

This is also a part of my work for the class so I'm working on a 5-6 minute PowerPoint presentation (Amber is gracious enough to help me) on the history of the dance and how it helps women, especially older women to have a more positive body image. The goal is to show people that the stereotypes they have of the dance are not what the dance is about and give them a different way to think about women's bodies.

That leaves us time for a show, some drumming and impromptu dancing, i.e. getting people up out of their seats and moving with us and just some general hoop di rah and fun.

This is paying gig--yay for us! The GSO-Graduate Student Organization has money and is delighted to throw some at us--woot!!

Plan to come in tribal costume, bring drums, shakers and all that jazz. Drummers are most welcome so you don't need to be dancing with the troupe to be part of this. As for the elements of the show, we have several choreohraphies we already know--hey...this is a group that has never see Ha Ha...we have soloists, and we are in the midst of doing some ATS for Festival, so I think we have that end covered. We just need to decide on what happens when.

Alina from Lotus Dance Studio and Lisa from Adelpha are hosting a tribal dance jam benefit for Johanna (Xenobia) of Loud Zoo. Tribal dancers of all levels are welcome. This is NOT a performance, this is just a gathering of tribal dancers to put on some music, get in a big chorus, and dance!!! (that's what ATS if all about, right?). A minimum $5.00 donation is requested at the door. Feel free to bring music you like and drums. Water and a light snack is okay in the studio but we cannot have massive quantities of food in there. If anyone wants to go out to eat afterward before going home, we can do that. Please let the non-online members of Troupe Zahara know about this!!!

Gecko Fest FUN!

I can only speak for myself -but- I had a really fun day at Gecko Festival in Gulf Port.
Troupe Zahara was all energy and good times and the crowd enjoyed the entertainment as much as the entertainment enjoyed the crowd ( my perspective)
I, unfortunately, did not take a picture but I know pictures were taken and I look forward to seeing some posted.
How about the rest of you?
I came home tired, content and in need of a nice shower ...which I enjoyed. I then slipped on the new Bamboo shirt/dress which is so comfy I want more...Had a great nights sleep (took my Alieve at bedtime) and am spending the "day after " enjoying the memory we just made together. Yes it was Hot, the clouds threatened for a little bit but did no harm, the food was yummy, the hospitality of the venue was wonderful, the drummers (all of them) were great, the spirit was high and I am a happy "Gecko Survivor."..thanks to all of you, all of them (all of them what came to see) Love and hugs and smiles ...

Folkloric making a popular return?

I am noting that there are more and more costuming garments associated with true folkloric dance being put in the fore front. I am hearing more and more comments being made about tribal vs true folkloric. I smell folkloric dancing on the winter wind...
Not that folkloric dance was ever lost, thatis not what I mean to imply. tribal dance and tribaret and tribal fusion seemed to have the front line there for awhile and the folkloric styles were put aside...Yeh, now they are coming back and everything is finding its balance in the dance communities. I do love a good folksy style dance. It also gives variety to the seminars and shows, I love all of it but I do have a tendency to get a little 'antsy 'if there are five or six of any one style in a row.
Anyway I was wondering if anyone else had taken note of this re-emergence of popularity in the folk dance area? Could have been just me obsessing one one area and not noticing that others were still going strong. (That would not be unusual behavior for me)
either way I am glad to see the ghawazee coats and Beledi dresses popping up on shopping sites again. Better go refurbish my cane....

Cancer Update From Johns Hopkins University

This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well.

No plastic containers in micro

No water bottles in freezer.

No plastic wrap in microwave...

A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.

Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Recently, Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital, was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers...

This especially applies to foods that contain fat.

He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body...

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food... You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else.

Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.

He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons...

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.

Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Basic directions

Take I-275 South or U.S. 19 towards St. Petersburg to 22nd Avenue South, go right (or west) to Beach Blvd., turn left and go south on Beach Blvd. towards the waterfront area.

Another option would be to travel south on 58th Street until you reach 28th Avenue South and go left to Beach Blvd., then turn right - or, take 58th Street South to Shore Blvd. South and turn left and go to Beach Blvd. (which is past the beach parking lot on the waterside and before the pier).

These are really good for tribal/fusion dance, and a couple are more complicated for precision choreography. Middle Eastern Drumming Workshop - February 24th 2007

FRAME DRUMS and DOUMBEK

DATE: FEBRUARY 24th 2007
TIME: 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
LOCATION: U.S. Tae Kwon Do Martial Arts Center,
905 N. Kingsway Rd. Seffner, FL 33584

Frame Drum Workshop:
The goal of this introductory workshop is to demonstrate proper hand technique and playing styles for the frame drums.
Participants may either use a frame drum or riq (Egyptian tambourine) for this class.
Simple patterns and simple forms of Middle Eastern rhythms will be introduced.
Class time: 1 hour 15 minutes.

Doumbek Workshop:
The goal of this workshop is to provide an introduction to Middle Eastern Rhythms as played on the Doumbek.
This class will build upon the rhythms covered in the Frame Drum workshop, and will include more variations.
We will explain the proper hand technique for playing this instrument in the traditional style.
More advanced players can explore other techniques including rolls, pops and grabs.
Class time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Drum Circle : Participants will now play together using the rhythms learned.
There will be different parts for each person to play and we will try out our new skills in a percussion ensemble!!
Class time: 30 minutes

Handouts will be made available at the end of the workshop with the rhythms that were discussed
so you can continue to practice on your own.
COST: 40.00 FOR BOTH CLASSES, 25.00 FOR ONE

Join zilling ace Zeyna Salah for an introductory course that will take you from the basics of fitting your zills all the way to dancing a short combo to your own zill accompaniment!

This 3 hour workshop will cover:
• hand warm-ups and strengthening exercises
• zill tidbits (how to sew the elastic properly, retune them, etc)
• the difference between zill patterns and zill rhythms (both how and when to play)
• graceful and dynamic arm and hand positions for zill playing
• music basics for non-musicians
• the basics of classical Middle Eastern rhythms and how to properly fill them in
• how to dance with you zills

You will learn a short zill combo -- a starting point in bringing your zilling and dancing into harmony.
Comprehensive handouts will be provided for you to take home so you can keep practicing!

Zeyna Salah, of Tampa, Florida, has been dancing since 1975. A retired Naturopath with 2 sons, 3 stepchildren, 6 grandkids and one great-grandson, she also had a long, professional career as a founder, choreographer, dancer and drummer with Miraje Middle East Dance Troupe in Pittsburgh. Dance credits include, from the Averof restaurant in Boston with George Abdo, numerous seminar appearances solo and with troupes, countless stages, dancing in a Hollywood movie, TV appearances, TV commercial work, in print, bellygrams, as well as teaching. Influential teachers include Cheri Miller, Bert Balladine, Serena, Bobby Farrah, Morocco and Barbara Whiting.
