Nameless Sound and The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum, in cooperation with The Menil Collection, presents:
Tetuzi Akiyama (Japan) - acoustic guitar
Jozef van Wissem (Holland) - renaissance lute

An artist of starkly contrasting styles, Tetuzi Akiyama gained international recognition as a member of Tokyo's "onkyo" scene of improvisers in the late 1990s. A groundbreaking and highly influential group, the onkyo musicians are known for zen-like subtlety, quietness and a remarkable use of silence. Akiyama's music can have these qualities, but his connections to blues and folk have always been clear. His acoustic performances are delicate, beautiful and expressive, often sounding like an intersection between country blues and traditional Japanese music.

Jozef van Wissem probably plays the most unlikely instrument in the world of contemporary improvised music: the Renaissance lute. He has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of seventeenth century lute literature and twenty-first century free improvisation. Van Wissem has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. Van Wissem first came to be noticed a few years ago because of his conceptual approach to Renaissance lute music: he deconstructed existing compositions, for instance, by playing them backwards. He also composed his own pieces for lute, using palindromes and mirrored structures. His music therefore does not have a traditional linear progression, nor does it lead to a climax; rather, it stays at the same level of intensity. His music is quiet. It doesn't so much demand concentrated listening, but it brings the listener into a state of concentrated listening—an aspect that makes Van Wissem a natural partner to Akiyama's zen-like blues.

The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum was opened in February 1997. Intimate in scale, the Chapel Museum is the repository in the United States for the only intact Byzantine frescoes in the entire western hemisphere. These masterworks from the 13th century—a dome and an apse—were stolen out of a chapel near Lysi in the Turkish occupied section of Cyprus in the 1980s, cut into pieces and smuggled off the island by thieves prepared to sell them piece by piece. The fresco fragments were rescued from the thieves by The Menil Foundation with the knowledge and approval of the Church of Cyprus, the rightful owner of the frescoes. The Menil Foundation then funded a painstaking two-year restoration of the paintings. Numerous private donors helped fund the construction of the Chapel Museum, which combines rough stone, opaque glass and rich woods to extraordinarily spiritual effect. The Church of Cyprus is allowing a long-term loan of the frescoes in the building designed especially for them by architect François de Menil.

Open call for dancers! Dance from the Heart is looking for principal and supporting dancers for its upcoming theatrical production and benefit premiering September 29, 2007. All levels welcome!

Audition Criteria:
Performance of a two-minute solo (choreographed or improvised)*
Zills required (for at least part of the audition piece)
Veil and/or cane also welcome as part of the audition.
Styles of dance may include Ballet/Modern, Oriental, Folkloric, or Flamenco.
Please bring two copies of your music on CD. It should be the only track on your CD and should not be an MP3.

HABDA Annual Elections Meeting !

Our March Meeting is the ANNUAL ELECTION for the HABDA Board

Saturday Afternoon ~~ March 24th ~~ 2 pm @ Sirrom.

This is the annual meeting were we take nominations from the floor for the elected positions on the board. Once nominations are complete, those in attendance at the meeting will submit their votes. New officers take office effective April 1st!

The transition of the positions will be an easy one – the outgoing board members will gently lead you through the process. And a few of us will attend the board meetings for the first few months to help you keep the ball rolling. What we are saying is no experience is necessary – it’s all about what you desire to contribute to the dance community at large by becoming a member of the board.

New members are welcome to run – you can join / re-new at the meeting. So if you have not submitted your 2007 dues you can do so at the meeting.

AND - FREE MONEY for dance workshops! There will be a drawing for 2 Dance Scholarships worth $100.00 each! All current 2007 members in attendance are eligible. Did I mention - FREE MONEY?

AND – we’ll all take suggestions from the floor about what you’d like to see HABDA do in 2007/08!

New Routine...

Just a quick correction on some recent posts... ;-)

Our new percussion routine is officially called "Raqs Beledi"...

The joke was that I originally called it "Ayana's Folly", as in the definition found in the dictionary:
Folly: A lack of good sense, understanding, or foresight; An act or instance of foolishness;

In essence, stating that I must be nuts to attempt this, considering that I'm trying to tackle so much at one time.. and asking each of you to do the same without a year of rehearsal time!!

It is not "Ayana's Follies", like the Ziegfeld version. LOL Not a big deal - Just wanted to clarify, so no one gets the wrong idea. ;-)

On Saturday August 5, 2006, I have scheduled a photo shoot at Zahirah's Belly Dance Studios, and would welcome any additional dancers who would like to come and have some photos made.

PLUS you can check out Zahirah's unbelievable studios while you're here! You'll be amazed!

Zahirah's Belly Dance Studios is located at
14520 Memorial, Suite 59
Houston, Texas 77079

I will set up a backdrop and rugs and plants and a few pillows and drums, and you or your troupe can come out and see Zahirah's GORGEOUS studio, and get some nice snaps while you are here.

Please let me know if you can attend by replying to this email. I'll respond with an estimated time for your session, but come early to check out the facilities.

CALL to RSVP...832-863-3367. If no answer, leave a message and I'll call back to arrange your session time.

Cost per dancer/troupe will be $20.00 and will include between 20-25 shots. No sitting fee or additional charges!! I will provide you with a CD of all photos a couple of days after the shoot, and can provide prints (at a reasonable price) of your favorites if you contact me after reviewing your CD.

I have been photographing dancers at workshop performances and in private sessions for several years. I strive for professional quality photos, a fun and invigorating experience for my subjects, and a lifetime of enjoyment for you.

Troupe Practice this weekend

A reminder for those that know, and notification for those that don't!

This weekend's troupe rehearsal (the new percussion routine we've started) is NOT taking place... I will be in Austin for a workshop. We will pick up rehearsals again on the 16th... same bat time, same bat channel. ;-)

Practice what you learned this last week - especially those of you drumming!! Get your slings ready and try them out this weekend, so that you'll feel more comfy dancing and drumming simultaneously.

I guess I'm still going to have to come up with a name for this routine... harder when I'm the composer AND the choreographer. LOL Perhaps it should just be called "Ayana's Folly".

Music and Zills classes

I'd like some feedback on the next music and/or zill classes...

I've had more requests for both, and will soon be looking to set dates. Here are my questions:

1. In a zill class - do you want dance and zills together, or just zills?
2. Should there be more than once class for different levels of experience, or just put all together in one?
3. Should the zill class and music class be combined in a single day mini-workshop format - zills in the morning, music in the afternoon?
4. Would you want performance information included in the music class?

Basically, here are the areas in which I specialize, and have taught separate classes either on their own or in a series:

Performance - how to prepare for performing professionally, choosing music and costuming, dealing with an audience, dealing with live music, how to handle problems during a set. How to own the room, project past the proscenium and make your audience feel your performance.

Zills - beginner to advanced levels - basic rhythms, advanced rhythms and syncopated combinations to fit into the different rhythms, dance/zill combos, zilling to live music, how NOT to overrun the music with your zill playing... speed, endurance, drills, when to play, when not to play...

Music - instrument identification, rhythm identification, change of mood, compare/contrast eastern and western music, type of music for type of dance, how to listen to the music and what to dance to, dancing to rhythm versus dancing to instruments or vocals, music theory, fusion, and breaking down the music for choreography.

Let me know what you would like to see out of these... either in a zill or music class, or even a combination of any of the three.

tribal yarn hair (cross-posting)

I used to make tribal yarn hair but am getting out of it to focus on other things. I still have some inventory left that I would like to move quickly, so I'm selling it for very little. Range of pieces from falls you tie into your hair or around a ponytail to large barrettes to tiny acent barrettes. Some pieces have cowrie shells also. Open membership

I have opened membership to the tribe to non-students and teachers... we had some requests to join, so I figured we should just be nicer and open up the doors. ;-)

The tribe is still moderated in the fact that one must request permission to join, but I let a couple of friends of the studio join as well. :-)

Favor to ask

I have a favor to ask of some sweet, wonderful, kind, compassionate, thoughtful person out there in Noore Kavir land. My parents are going with me and Ronnie to BDSS next week. However, we will be having dinner before the show. We got tickets through Robin who is asking that anyone who bought tickets through her be at the theater at 7:00 to claim them. Obviously, if we are going to dinner, we will not be there that early. I was wondering if anyone will be attending the show that early and, if so, if you wouldn't mind picking up our four tickets from Robin. We could them claim them later when we arrive. Oh, and yes, we have already paid for the tickets - ha! Anyway, just thought I would toss the question out to see if there are any generous volunteers. I'll be happy to buy a Coke (or a glass of wine if they serve it) for the generous volunteer as a reward for this great act of kindness and
philanthropy.

Here we go - welcome everyone to the Zahirah Noor tribe. I thought it would be nice to have a place where we can post updates about classes, troupe stuff, workshops, etc, that deal specifically with us.
