Cassandra, also knows as Art Polansky, apparently died on December 5th. The only way I know this is that Short Mountain Sanctuary has received a notice that his will is in probate, and he left them some money. Cassandra loved visiting Zuni, and read his amazing poetry at Know Talent Shows. His acerbic sense of humor will be greatly missed.

He was a wonderful potter, and lived in North Asheville as a hermit. He partcipated in public bridge tournaments, and that gave him pleasure. I don't know if he had close friends or family. A few of us in Asheville who knew him are having a memorial on March 7th at 5PM. Let me know if you want to attend.

I've been digging through files, and have found some haiku written by Cassandra from a gathering at Short Mountain, probably in 1998. I don't remember the occasion, but it was clearly something to do with a circus, and he must have written these really fast - I have 4 pages worth (about 30 haiku). Here are some samples:

Why would people wear
Lampshade hats and balloon pants?
Air conditioning.

Live in a glass house.
Throw stones.
Understand Buddha.

Into every act
A glass of silly putty
Must be injected.

Master the big cats.
Master the bears and the snakes.
And then, master me.

Step right up and see
Why they ride so carefully:
Oats and Viagra.

Why I give prunes to
Constipated elephants:
I love a parade.

If anyone has other (longer) poems by Cassandra, let me know.

Sadly,
Mountaine

    I grieve this loss.

Cassandra tried to live at ZMS off and on. He loved the people there and hated the heat and the bugs. He'd chop wood in the buff, because the heat was too much, and then come running inside to escape the bugs. His enthusiasm for gathering and splitting wood helped keep us warm in the cold winter.

Here's a little poem to remember him:

    He mastered us all
    sewing fields with poignancy
    reaping love and laughs

Those of us at the sanctuary mourn the loss of our dear sister Cassandra -her sassy wit, eccentric wisdom and gentle creativity will be missed. As a memorial the stewards have been collecting together some of her art pieces she left at the sanctuary to exhbit during the upcoming gathering season. Her pottery style was simple and elegant with her trademark beetle-bug on the bottom of her work. In addition to her symbolic 69.00 contributions she also donated her subscription to National Geographic magazine which has inspired so many faeries on the land about the world around them.

    blessings,

    Munk-Hitirus @ ZMS
  • that underwear

i think of cassandra and i have to chuckle...that underwear, sagging in the breeze, all that nasty talk and then, just when you thought he hated you, he would look at you in the coolness of twilight and say the most profound, personal thing to you.

he is or was no IS one of those people you meet in your life who is so original, so intelligent, so uniquely their own, that their impression on you, however brief, is incandescent.

ah, one thing i remember, aside from his wild grumpiness ...which never seemed to really annoy me.....
was his stories of the stars, oh how they delighted him....

and yes, to see him in the mid winter in his underwear saying how hot it was....

oh dear cassandra travel well travel well, you have jumped the bridge between worlds,

sing ur song upon the winds of dear zuni

and spin spin spin the ethers as you did pots....

    bless you
    and bless us all!
