Re: A Zoe workshop... without Zoe?
Tue, October 20, 2009 - 3:28 PMNo, it's not really a Zoe workshop, it was only inspired by her tecniques. Everybody who took the workshop knew it, so no big deal...
Someday we will bring Zoe here, but until we can't...

Re: A Zoe workshop... without Zoe?
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 11:15 AMUgh...come on. Anyone who calls her/himself a teacher should be teaching their own style, not profiting off of someone else's hard work and creativity! I mean, unless there's been some kind of certification in a specific style like how FatChance and Suhaila do it...but seriously? Just taking someone's distinct style and teaching it? Did they bother asking Zoe? If they didn't get her express permission, they shouldn't even be using her name to advertise their classes. It's one thing to say, "here's a move I learned from X Dancer" but totally another thing to have a whole workshop based on someone's innovative style. Sigh... -

Re: A Zoe workshop... without Zoe?
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 7:54 AMGibs, this teacher , Mrs. Kilma Farias is simply one of the top tribal bellydancers in Brazil, and she developed the most beautiful fusion between american tribal bellydance and brasilian folcloric rithms and dances. She have more than a decade of dance study and she's a pioneer in tribal fusion in my country. And we study her tecniques between us students even if we don't have the privilege of her presence.
We din't have the privilege of Mrs. Jakes presence in our land yet but, if you study hard based in one dancer's moves and tecniques, waste our time creating a way of teaching those moves without injuring your students and even creates coreographies based on that work, should you not be rewarded for that? She based her carrier totaly based on her marvelous work on brasilian tribal fusion (as we call it) does she deserve that we say that she's profiting on Zoe's hard work? And how about her hard work?
And didn't Zoe created a dvd with her drum solo tecniques? if you don't want to learn from nobodyelse but Zoe , just buy the dvd, it's your choice.
if anyone is interested here is a sample of Kilma's work, a performance featured in her dvd of brasilian tribal style (the video was shot from an amateus camera during the process of shooting the dvd) www.youtube.com/watch -

Re: A Zoe workshop... without Zoe?
Sun, October 25, 2009 - 7:38 PMI am sure Kilma Farias is a wonderfully talented dancer and instructor, and have no doubt that she has developed her own style based on tribal fusion and other forms. Which is part of the reason why I don't understand taking someone else's very distinctive style and teaching it, instead of figuring out a way of getting that teacher to your area. I understand that it's hard when you're outside the US, but many dancers in other countries invite US dancers to teach their style. That's how many dancers support themselves as dancers and teachers, and get their style out into the world.
Again, Zoe herself may be fine with it and if her permission was asked for, that's one thing. I don't wish to speak for her in any way. But...
I don't feel it's right to blatantly teach someone else's style when it's not yours to teach. Kilma should of course be respected and rewarded for her OWN hard work--but not profit from someone else's. That is the issue. And yes, Zoe did put out a dvd...this allows those who perhaps cannot easily take workshops from her in person to still learn *from her*. That's the key. If you want to learn Zoe techniques, buy the dvd and support the original artist herself instead of putting on a workshop with someone else teaching her style. And you may not think that it affects her business overly much, but imagine if everyone decided to teach another artist's work themselves...it's all a matter of amount.
If Kilma has a wonderful style of her own, then I think it's great that she teaches that style. But teach someone else's? Nope...can't go for that.

Re: A Zoe workshop... without Zoe?
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 9:00 AMTeaching their own style? How many different styles are there in Tribal fusion? As many as dancers?
I personally find it flattering for Zoe.
Girls down in Brazil are contributing to making Zoe's technique known. Do you really think this will hurt Zoe's career ? That it is disrespectful? I think more and more people will go see who the "real Zoe" is, will buy her DVD's etc...Nobody's stealing anything here. They're clearly stating it's a Zoe 's technique given by somebody else. That is pretty ethical as a lot of dancers - teachers, steal moves, techniques, teaching styles from other without ever saying who it comes from.
This tread is becoming like the one around the "Serpent rouge" one. (unnecessarily mean and childish towards those girls from Chile, in my opinion).
When you live outside the US, you don't have access to all those dancers. It's hard to be self trained. I like the performance of that Brazilian teacher Kilma Farias Alic gave us the link to. Very personal and creative.
I'm sure a lot of teachers do the same in the US without putting their video up on you tube.
Zoe is unique, and she is an inspiration. People learn her moves and teach them. As long as Zoe's name is in there, It's respectful and contributes to have more of Miss Jakes around the world. If I were Zoe, I would want to go to Brazil and meet those ultra motivates girls that learn a style all by them selves.
Then only thing I don't understand is the point of having a Youtube clip of the workshop...performance yes, but classes?

Re: A Zoe workshop... without Zoe?
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 10:11 AMShe just uses the videos on her youtube acount as a form of personal blog , so that her students and fans (like myself) could have a taste of what her class was, and incorage other students to come and have her classes. My home town for exemple is 2.413 km from hers so, it a way for me to know what's goin' on 'round there... -
