I know that Zoe is a member of Beats Antique and I've seen that she's credited as co-producer of the first album (I don't have the second one yet so I don't know if the same applies). I'd be interested to know a bit more more about her input so if anyone knows, I'd appreciate a brief response.

I find it impressive that bellydance is inspiring musician/dancer collaborations of this kind - I can't recall anything comparable happening in relation to other forms of dance!

Saturday:
1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-Up (Aubre)
Learn basic Pilates principles and how to apply this work in creating a strong and stable body placement for dance. Pilates is also a great rehabilitation module for dancers.
2-4: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (back, hips, pelvis, sacrum & legs) (Aubre) From balance to stability and freeing the body for all the wonderful isolations of bellydance, Aubre will present exercises and techniques to understanding the kinetic chain and interconnected quality of the lower half. Including special attention to sacral stability while maintaining strong hip isolations.
4-6p: The Spine: The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (Aubre & Deb.)

Sunday:
12-1: Core Yoga for Dancers Warm Up (Deb)
1-3: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (Deb)
Free up the neck/head, shoulders, spine, &sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.
3-4: Bellyrolls and Abs: Understanding and isolating the deeper core muscles for the smooth, fluid moves of bellyrolls and undulations. (Aubre)

This all new workshop offers sustainable fan technique for bellydancers, along with drills, emphasis on building strength and posture, and combinations that can be reworked for use in your own choreographies and improvisations. Inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the Fine Art of flirtation, old dance hall, and every performer's need for self-defense, Ona's Fan Fusion is long on attitude and physical power. Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of this class. Ona's preferred fans will be for sale at the event, or you may bring your own. As a special rarety, live music will carry the dancer through every step and flourish.
Feisty Fanwork & Combinations
Savor the flavor of passion as we sieze the potential of every dancer's indispensible tool- the Fan. This all new workshop offers sustainable fan technique for bellydancers, along with drills, emphasis on building strength and posture, and combinations that can be reworked for use in your own choreographies and improvisations. Inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the Fine Art of flirtation, old dance hall, and every performer's need for self-defense, Onça's Fan Fusion is long on attitude and physical power. Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of this class. Onça's preferred fans will be for sale at the event, or you may bring your own. As a special rarety, live music will carry the dancer through every step and flourish.
Top of Form
Register today at www.theminimassive.com before this workshop sells out!

Zoe jewelry fund?

I know Zoe's feeling the love from her fellow dancers since her stuff got swiped, but I would really like to help with her getting some new stuff of her own choosing. I thought if we can get 100 people here to donate $5, that would giver her $500 bucks to get some new jewelry with. Sure when we're talking rajasthani thats like 2 bracelets, but it would be to her liking for sure. And yeah, beggars can't be choosers, but I also think givers shouldn't always be 'pickers'. I'm sure Zoe appreciates anything anyone is sending to her, but alas I have nothing appropriate to send and I want to do 'something'.

I don't know if Medina would be willing to let us use the same paypal account as the makeup fund to send donations to? Please chime in if you can or if you have an alternative.

So here we go, #1 here , 99 more?...

Human Rodeo Vision writeup including Zoe!! PLEASE READ THIS!

The Rodeo Vision

I grew up on a cattle ranch, Angus to be specific. 40acres, 3 ponds, herd of cattle, 2 dogs, 4 cats, rounds of rattlesnake, 1 pig, 4 motorcycles, 1 boat, 3 pickup trucks and 4 horses.

Biscuit. The 15 hand tall brown Quarter Horse. I was 7 years old when my Dad convinced my mother to purchase a mother-daughter Horse combo that were for sale close to the ranch. Flying Star Ranch…my memories are coming back, I forgot that part. My mother worked full time and my Dad was a pilot so he was away on planes for most of my life. Minus a few years when he was laid off and played janitor at my school (my favorite years.) So Biscuit, the daughter of the team at 6 months old, and I had 40 acres and absolutely no chaperone from 7 to 16 years old when I left home. Let the ruckus begin…

She bit me, kicked me, ran me thru fences, into trees, stepped on me and tried to drown me in the pond on a daily basis. After years of abuse she was my best friend and I don’t blame her, we grew up together. These memories are some of the most fulfilling golden nuggets still left bouncing around in my mind. One more story before I get to business.

Biscuit was dark brown and pretty much invisible at night except for the white diamond on her forehead…I almost typed foreheart…awwwww. So school was about a 45 minute drive from the ranch, in “town”, and it got dark early in the winter. By the time I got home from school and then basketball practice, it was late and dark most everyday. I would park my truck at the house and then take my motorcycle down the hill to feed the animals. Here’s where Biscuit comes in. I parked the motorcycle around the corner of the barn and would walk to the hay barn. As soon a I opened the hay door, I would hear it. Biscuit, who I hardly thought was starving after grazing 40 acres on her own free will, would run to the barn. I mean run. I would hear the hooves, but I couldn’t see her. Remember? Dark brown, dark dark brown. She would get closer and closer and the sound of her pounding hooves and heaving breath was incredibly intimidating. She was huge! And I would stand by the door cowering. Just waiting for her to plow right thru me. But she never did. She would stop just in front me, just in front of me. Nostrils flared, ears back and eyes wide open. Wild and completely in control.

This my friends was the inspiration.

The Rodeo Summary

The venue! The Rodeo will be located at Long Branch Ranch, a ghost town recreation complete with small town, mercantile, saloon and a ton more I cant remember. It’s amazing. I mean really. For serious people… it’s perfect.

The stables will be open from 420 to 5pm, At 6pm meet at the coral for the Rodeo showcase. The Rodeo showcase will run for one hour from 6-7pm. This showcase includes dance performances by UNMATA, Verbatim, Street Team, Hot Pot Studio and Suhaila Salimpour. Dinner starts at 730pm with outdoor dining and entertainment. 9pm the Saloon opens! All night drinking, gambling and general mayhem!

Please come. I’ve dreamed about this for years. It could quite possibly be one of the biggest things I do artistically in my life. I would love to share it with you. Check out www.unmata.com for tickets. See you at The Rodeo!

Zoe Jakes's Costumes, and Jewlery stolen

Zoe just reported on her face Book page that her entire costumes and jewelry were stolen.

She wrote this comment in her status:

"Zoe Jakes is mourning. The ultimate dancers nightmare has happened. All my jewelry and costumes and headgear...everything...gone. Stolen out of my car. Talk about the true test of non-attachment."

I pray for her stuff to be returned.

She is truly a great teacher. A worse thing couldn't have happened to someone whom didn't deserve it. She definately didn't deserve this.

as an artist, myself, I know how it feels to have your stuff stolen, especially the stuff you need to do and make your creativity, and also the stuff I had already put in so much time, effort, money, investment, and heart.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
Knock 'em dead!
What works on stage, you ask, especially those bigger ones with the fancy lighting, back stages, and sound guys? This class is for those wanting an understanding of what really carries all the way to the back rows. Get ready for big fantastic whip-sharp moves supplied with clear and concise explanations for graceful and flawless execution. Tips and concepts to make you hip work bigger, sharper, and more polished (thus more effective on stage), and how to improve speed while not loosing clarity of movement.

The Art of Making It Weird (Slow, Lovely, and Strange)
We are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horizontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquisite and strange), belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

ABOUT ZOE JAKES…
Zoe is a proud member of The Indigo, which recently was on the road touring their new show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD. Her first DVD, a drum solo choreography, will be coming out this winter. Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to form the band Beats Antique, Zoe has just release their second album with CIA records, Collide. When not with The Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show, a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and Indian classical dance as well as all things vaudeville. Zoe was nominated for Zaghareets best interpretive artist 2007, and The Indigo recently won best troupe 2008. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.

BEATS ANTIQUE'S second album has brought the paradox of electro-acoustic music into the future.

The event includes:
-Opening performances by Incus (tribal medicine rock) and Vadalna Tribal Dance Co.!
-Beats Antique featured at the top of the night
-World Beat set from Boston's own DJ Lavoie!

We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horozontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquiste and strange) , belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

Hip, head, shoulder and chest isolations will be drilled, as well as working on smoothing transitions from move to move. We will go over lots of pop-lock technique, as well as fluidity of movement, stressing on posture and upper body awareness.

The Bellydance Body: Full weekend Intensive!
Biomechanics, Therapeutics, & Embodiment for Dancers—from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives.
With Aubre Hill & Deb Rubin.

**9 full hours of study!**
NEW to LA!
**Necessary foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance.

Drawing from the wisdom body traditions of Pilates, & Yoga, as well as extensive professional and personal experiences in the fields of Holistic Health, Dancer Rehabilitation, and Bellydance, Deb & Aubre combine forces to bring you this jam-packed weekend including:

- Experiential anatomy
~Biomechanics of technique
~Injury prevention and rehabilitation of common bellydance injuries
~ Discussion, practice,hands-on learning
- Team teaching with Aubre & Deb, therefore dual perspectives on material.
~Skills, practices, and embodied awareness to take your dancing to the next level
~one-on-one attention.
~All material directly applied to bellydance

This workshop weekend will assist you in radically shifting bellydance posture and technique, and freeing up new movement pathways to support healthy, embodied dancers. We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips--, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance. And a necessary addition for Teachers in their tool kit of how to break down and explain safe, proper technique and give one-on-one student feedback and attention to detail.

Come develop a more connected conversation with your own body. Increase body awareness, core stabilization, and presence in movement, taking your dance to the next level, from amateur to artist.

Many thanks to Zoe, Helen, and my fellow dancers for an awesome workshop today at Essential Indigo in Seattle! All of the workshops were fantastic. And now we know how to go about hunting that sneaky flutter ...

I'm looking for the ID of a song that Zoe played several times during her workshop. I don't honestly remember very much about it except that it had a hip hop/industrial fusion feel and one of the repeated lyrics was "Please don't change the way I felt for you." (or maybe, "fell for you?" "feel for you?" I dunno.) Help!

Hey all...

Ok. It's been a month since I saw the fantabulous Zoe and crew with BDSS live and in action...and the music is STILL stuck in my head. I knew the Brass Menazeri piece, but before that, the more hip-hop type pieces are the ones I've got burned in my brain.

help? O_O

Le Serpent Rouge is a wily half breed of vintage cabaret and old-time music. Internationally renowned Belly Dance company The Indigo have charmed the hearts of princes and tramps alike, while The Crow Quill Night Owls and The Gallus Brothers have seduced the tympanums of thousands with their arresting interpretations of old-timey country blues, jazz and pop. Sometimes enchanting, sometimes macabre, often raucous, but always delightful, this outfit breathes new life into the movement and spectacle of a bygone era in their new knockdown revue.

I was watching Zoe's new DVD today and thought:

"Oh such pretty long hair.....I wonder if it ever gets caught in her armpits." When I had extensions (they were pretty long) I had that problem a lot. Its happening again since my hair is getting longer.

So am I the only one with this problem?

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
Bits & Bobs: A Dance Collage - using bits and pieces of familiar bellydance moves, Alyssum will lead us through some creative, fun stylizations, and newly woven combinations. Musicality and precise technique will be focused on in this intermediate/advanced workshop. Come ready to have some Aha! moments.

ZOE WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

ABOUT ALYSSUM POHL…
Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, Alyssum Pohl brings wit and joy to her performance. A lifelong dancer, she began her study of tribal-style bellydance with Sri Tarasita, director of Rakadu Gypsy, in 1998, and commenced performing with Rakadu three years later. Rakadu, famous for their storytelling and improvisational bellydance, is and has been the perfect fountainhead for Alyssum's performance style. In addition to bellydance, Alyssum is accomplished in yoga, front-bending contortion, rhythm tap, and has many years of training in dance forms from around the world besides. While she lived in New England (2004-2008), she honed her own style of tribal bellydance by incorporating her contortion abilities and sharpening her isolations. She is influenced greatly by her teachers Sri Tarasita and Julie Lively as well as Heather Stants, Mira Betz, and more.

About The Indigo: The Indigo Belly Dance Company is a tribal fusion style belly
dance company based in San Francisco. It was founded by Rachel Brice in 2003. Its members
include Brice, Mardi Love and Zoë Jakes, whom all currently teach and perform internationally
and whom have also appeared with BellyDance Superstars. 2007 marked The Indigo's first full-
length touring show, Le Serpent Rouge, presented by Miles Copeland.

Thursday, April 9
10:30-12:30: Rachel Brice: Practice and Combinations for Slow
Dancing
In this workshop we will 1) warm up with exercises that develop the feet and legs
for walking slowly and level changes, 2) practice Belly Dance movements for slower
tempos, 3) learn two or three combinations crafted from these movements, and 4) finish
with a compensatory therapeutic Viniyoga practice.
Please note that slower does not necessarily mean easier. Please go at your own
pace. Suggestions for safe practice will be offered. Bring layers of comfortable stretchy
clothes including pants, and a yoga mat. You may bring a video camera to video yourself
performing the choreography at the end of class.

1:00-3:00: Mardi Love: The Good Ol’ Fashioned
This workshop delivers drills and combinations for quicker tempos. Combinations lend
themselves well in improvisation, providing variety and contrast. They also prove handy
as building blocks in choreography. Movements will be broken down and drilled.
Combos will be joined together to form a short dance. Some belly dance experience
highly recommended.

3:30-5:30: Zoe Jakes: Finger Cymbal Drilling & Short Choreography
This workshop is for dancers wishing to enhance their finger cymbal skills. We will use
drills that will help you dance with more confidence as you become proficient in playing
various zill patterns. Then a Zoe style short choreography to bring it all together!
No prior zill experience required some belly dance experience required

Friday, April 10

10:30-12:30: Mardi Love: The Sweet and Low Down
Spend the first part of class brushing up on some slow technique. You'll get acquainted
with some slower combinations and work with inserting them into tribal improv
movements with ease and fluidity.

1:00-3:00: Zoe Jakes: Layering with Shimmies Zoe Style
Zoe pulls all the shimmies from her book for this one. Shimmies powered by the glutes,
oblique shimmies, chooches, and 3/4 shimmies....but then adds chest slides, hits, pops,
figure 8's, and belly rolls. Your legs and your brain are gonna get a serious workout!
Workshop level: Intermediate to advanced level class.

3:30-5:30: Rachel Brice: Creating Strength & Flexability in the Lateral
Muscles
The side muscles of the body are an important part of Belly Dance. These muscles are
seldom used in many people's daily life, therefore careful planning is helpful to prepare
and compensate for Belly Dance movements. This workshop is a Yoga and conditioning
class for the purpose of building strength and stability in the musculature of the spine, rib
cage, shoulders and pelvis. The participants will be given simple principles applicable to
their daily practice to safely increase flexibility in the muscles of these areas.
Bring layers of comfortable stretchy clothes including pants, and a yoga mat.

Saturday, April 11th

10:00-12:00: Zoe Jakes: Dancing with Intention Master Class
Tools for dancers ready to figure out how they want to perform and what they want to
convey. We’ll work on focus, conveying emotion, expression, all while dancing and
utilizing theatre prep techniques. Think ‘Belly dance Theatrics 101. This is an
Intermediate level class, some belly dance experience highly recommended.
4:30-6:30: Rachel Brice: Practice and Combinations (including finger
cymbal patterns) for Faster Tempos
In this workshop we will 1) warm up with exercises that develop the feet and legs for
quick foot and hip work, 2) practice Belly Dance movements for quick tempos to build
clarity and stamina 3) learn two or three combinations crafted from these movements, and
4) finish with a compensatory therapeutic Viniyoga practice. This is a challenging class.
Please go at your own pace. Suggestions for safe practice will be offered. Bring layers of
comfortable stretchy clothes including pants, a bottle of water and a yoga mat. You may
bring a video camera to video yourself performing the choreography at the end of class.
7:00-9:00pm: Mardi Love: Lil’ Twofer
Part A: Separation Anxiety: Isolation Patterns
Goody, a bunch of drills will ask for a little concentration. Enjoy an afternoon of quirky
patterns while keeping timely hips on the back burner. Indulge; it's good for you. Belly
dance experience or a penchant for patting the head and rubbing the tummy
recommended.

Part B: That's How We Roll
Spend a little time brushing up on some slow technique, with some emphasis on belly
rolls....perhaps my favorite constituent in quintessential belly dance. We'll be making
room for them in basic movements with layering, and working them into combinations.
Movements will be broken down and drilled. Belly rolls for some hours.... consider that
as you plan your menu for the day.

Hi hi ladies :D

I've been working with Zoe's new DVD for a couple weeks now ... I can't seem to get the hang of a cross over turn -_- LOL I fumble my feet and can't quite figure out where they're supposed to go. Can anyone help me with this? What's the secret! Does the spin start before the foot I'm crossing hits the ground? And my feet... do I just let them skid along the ground the whole way 'round or is there a step sequence I'm missing? Hope you ladies can help! =D

Also... what is an oblique shimmy?

Thanks so much!

Again today, I found myself scouring your performance videos in hopes of, well, not emulating you but hopefully, not suck quite as much. I can pop and even lock, but that great flowy thing just...okay, I just can't do it.

But I'd still like to try. So, I'm wondering: 1) yoga, maybe? or 2) you just work your ass off, practice all of the time and are naturally talented (which is probably true, but--from my single mom point of view--would really suck ) or 3) you are boneless, which would be kind of gross, but would make for a helluva bar story.

Just kidding...sorta.

Seriously though, do you incorporate any (or a lot) of yoga into your already intimidating workout schedule? I'm an embryonic belly dancer who is under no illusions of quitting my day job...but I would still like to look somewhat flowy..

Zoe Jakes workshop in Augusta, GA close to selling out, limited to 25 attendants

Just a heads up that the Zoe workshop that Alchemy is hosting in Augusta, GA is close to selling out. There are 5 slots left. Once these sell out, there will be no at-the-door registration. This workshop will be a very unique opportunity in that registration is limited to 25 attendees so that more personal attentions (and therefore more bang for your buck) are guaranteed. Check out the website for workshop decsriptions and registration options:

Zoe dear, I have a question for you! I'm curious to know how a typical day of practice goes for you. I'm having a bit of trouble structuring my own practice and could use some pointers. So tell us! How do you practice? =D

help finding bindis....preferable online!?

I love Zoe's chunky bindis, and I found them at a workshop some time ago. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough cash to pick some up at the time, AND silly me forgot to get the vendor's business card.

In the meantime I have been using the flimsy paper bindis, but i keep ripping them!

I have been searching high and low online for sometime and have come up empty handed:(

Can anyone point me in the right direction!?!?!?!?!

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrice

Zoe Painting - Gauging Interest

Awhile back I painted this http://yogaandtheindigo.tribe.net/photos/305b7a46-b021-400e-87ef-fcbe8939658e and submitted it for the Indigo book project. But times are hard for a self employed artist and I have started to think about selling it. Of course, I would want it to go to a Zoe enthusiast! I realize everyone is in the same financial straights these days, but if anyone would be interested, drop me a private message and we'll tawlk.

And if this post is out of bounds Madame Moderator, I apologize in advance and submit myself for chastisement!

what is this top made of?

http://tribes.tribe.net/zoe/photos/de2a4083-50ad-4353-b8a5-277bf577cac9

Zoeeeeeee. Pwese tell me what you used as the base for this top. Or if anyone has any ideas on what the base is that could be helpful too.

I decorated my first tribal top, using a black bra as a base but it just really looks to much like, well, a bra with some fancy stuff on it. it doesn't have the same comfort as the triangle tops I'm used to wearing, and it doesn't feel like it provides near enough security. suggestions?
